Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, inspired by Jerusalem Delivered by Tasso is a magnificent illustration of the art of Monteverde. A theatre in miniature, the work is a unique synthesis of the madrigal and opera. Monteverdi's aim was to illustrate three fundamental "moods" (anger, moderation, humility) through a new musical language. And the result is dazzlingly poetic and inventive. The pieces gathered by Magdalena Kožená around this "founding" Combat are a very representative anthology of the Italian music of this innovative Italian seicento and two modern pieces, but which are in perfect resonance with their elders, Luciano Berio's La Sequenza III where here the parlando becomes whispered.
